It has been a while since I wrote about adoption and related records. As 2021 nears an end, it is time to look at what 2022 has to offer. Original birth certificate access opens on January 1st to some Iowa-born adopted people.
The Iowa Department of Public Health website has information about the law that allows those born before 1 January 1971 to apply for a non-certified copy of their original birth certificate. If the adult adopted person is deceased, some family members are eligible for the certificate.
In addition, Iowa birth parents can complete a contact preference form. Birth parents may also have their identifying information redacted from a certificate.
