Lake County, Illinois, Online Resource Updates

If you have interest in Lake County, Illinois, historical and genealogical research, check out the newest items on my Lake County, Illinois: Resources Online page. Some online resources are free to access, other items are on subscription databases. Additions include links to Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, a growing number of digitized local newspapers, and various yearbooks for companies at the naval training center at Great Lakes. Those with Deerfield or West Deerfield Township settlers will want to look at the variety of digitized records relating to that location, such as poll books and voter registers. I add resources often, so periodically check the page for new items. I hope that you find something to enrich your research!

Winnie Cunningham and Luther LoyMy teen-aged great-grandmother, Winnie Cunningham, walked from Kansas to northeastern Illinois next to her family’s covered wagon. Her parents pursued a religious utopia. Her future husband, Luther Loy, had parents after the same dream; the Loys likely took a train from Kansas. The theocracy they were drawn to did not last. My ancestor, Captain Dennis Henry McBride, commanded a ship that made hundreds of voyages from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Grand Haven, Michigan. It was fun to find an image of the port he so often visited.
